Instagram’s Vertical Shift
Instagram users are unhappy with a new change: the platform is testing a vertical profile grid instead of the traditional square one. This change, which will soon be available to all users, is intended to better align with the increase in vertical content like Reels.
Square Format Disappears
According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, this is a response to the fact that most content nowadays is vertical, such as photos in 3:4 or videos in 9:16. Mosseri acknowledges that this adjustment may be frustrating for users who have carefully curated their profiles with square images, but he aims to better align the content with modern trends.
Perfect Feed in Danger?
Although the change seems logical, it has sparked resistance among many users. Those who have meticulously curated their feeds are especially unhappy. They fear their ‘perfect feed’ will be disrupted as their carefully placed square photos are stretched and distorted.
Another Update
This update is also not the first major change from Instagram. In recent years, the platform has repeatedly implemented updates that altered the user experience. This leads to frustration among users who have to keep adapting. Despite the frustration, switching from 1:1 to 3:4 is important so your posts don’t get distorted and your feed doesn’t look ‘ugly’!
