Bye Bye Twitter, but what alternative are you joining?

8 May 2023 - Esther Basting

Our announcement about the end of Twitter isn’t even a month old, and yet another alternative has emerged. Are you waiting for Meta’s alternative to Twitter, called Barcelona, or is the grass greener at Bluesky?

New platforms appearing out of nowhere

New social media platforms are appearing out of nowhere and it’s not stopping any time soon. Remember the popularity of Clubhouse during Corona, the innovative BeReal and the recently launched Lemon8, which could possibly replace Instagram or TikTok. Now that Twitter is becoming increasingly chaotic, new alternatives are coming at you left and right. Which ones will survive?

The two newest Twitter alternatives

There are two new Twitter alternatives: Bluesky and Barcelona. Bluesky is decentralized and gives users control over their algorithm and feed. However, it’s still in the startup phase and is facing issues such as hate messages and uncensored nude photos on the For You page. Barcelona is the upcoming Meta alternative. You can compose messages up to 500 characters and it too would be decentralized (although no details have been released yet). The only known feature is the ability to log in with your Instagram account. The main question is, are people ready for yet another new Meta platform? And do they dare to take on the new app Bluesky with all the negative press?

Of course, there are other alternatives to Twitter, such as Mastodon, Parler, and Reddit. But we can’t rule out Twitter itself yet. Countless social platforms have tried and failed, so why would these succeed? We’re still waiting to see. Are you open to a new variant of Twitter?
